The son of businessman Samir Mane has been arrested by the Tirana Traffic Police after causing a traffic accident with material damage while driving under the influence of alcohol and clashing with the officers.
The incident happened three days ago on “Xhorxh Bush” street, near the Parliament. The 28-year-old hit two parked cars and left the scene, but was stopped a few meters further by the police. According to the official announcement, he resisted taking the alcohol test, but the test was carried out and confirmed he was intoxicated.
“The Road Traffic Sector arrested in flagrante M.M., 28 years old, after he hit 2 parked vehicles and left the scene of the accident. After being stopped by the police officers, he resisted the alcohol test, from which he resulted intoxicated. Procedural materials were forwarded to the Prosecution Office for further action,” the police statement reads.
The officer who handled the case, Azbi Spahiu, falls from building after pressure
A few hours after the incident, a Traffic Police officer, Azbi Spahiu, 57, fell from the seventh floor of a building and was taken in serious condition to the Trauma Hospital. Journalist Klodiana Lala stated that Spahiu was part of the police group that stopped the son of Samir Mane and was later summoned by the AMP, where he was questioned about the actions taken.
According to Lala, before jumping, Spahiu sent messages to his son saying that “they were destroying his career.”
“Azbi Spahiu handled the case of Samir Mane’s son. He was called to the AMP and was asked to explain the procedures. Under pressure, he wrote to his son that they were destroying his career and then jumped from the height. The incident requires immediate investigation,” Lala declared.
She added that the businessman’s son, after being arrested, was transferred to the hospital claiming he did not feel well, and the next day he was released by the prosecutor, who considered the arrest unlawful.
Lala emphasized that neither the police nor the AMP have yet provided clear explanations regarding the procedure followed for the young man and the reasons for summoning officer Spahiu, while the lack of transparency has increased suspicions.
“Azbi is the weakest link. The silence of the institutions makes the situation even more unclear. There must be an investigation both into the arrest of Mane’s son and into the pressure placed on the officer,” the journalist stressed.
At the hospital, the condition of the 57-year-old is reported to have stabilized. The incident has triggered a strong debate about pressure on police officers and the handling of cases involving individuals with influence.
